WHO MURDERED CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE THE ELIZABETHAN DRAMATIST on 30th May 1593? It is a dark and dangerous history. Why was his murderer Pardoned by Queen Elizabeth I? His murderer was the servant to Queen Elizabeth's "Spymaster of the Catholics" Sir Francis Walsingham. Perhaps Marlowe's murderer committed the greatest sin that was ever brought to bear upon the readers of monumental literature. He deprived us all of reading Marlowe's future masterpieces of which there would certainly have been many more. There is an unsolved mystery surrounding the murder of Christopher Marlowe who was a friend of Sir Walter Raleigh. They used to write exchanges of poetry to each other and it can be found in such works as "The Passionate Shepherd" and "A Nymph's Reply." (In Raleigh's reply)to Marlowe, he wrote "If all the world and love were young, and truth in every Shepherds tongue..." etc. Marlowe was probably the greatest dramatist England has ever known and rivalled William Shakespeare. Marlowe's work still has the ability to bring his reader to tears through the beauty of his words. By the age of 29 Marlowe had written such masterpieces such as Tamburlaine (1587), Tamburlaine Part II (1588), Doctor Faustus (1588/9), The Jew of Malta 1588, Edward II, (registered by William Jones on 6th July 1593 in the name of Marlowe), Dido 1591, The Massacre at Paris (1592) Hero and Leander (1593) and Richard II (as recorded in a letter written by Robert Devereaux, 2nd Earl of Essex and referred to at a supper held on 9th December 1595 attended by Lady Mary Hoby, Lady Scrope, Lord Cobham and The Earl of Essex). Marlowe also wrote lyric poems and the translated Ovid's poems from Latin. Christopher Marlowe was murdered at midnight on Wednesday 3oth May, 1593 - if you want to know more, this information is available in the book entitled "The King's Quinto: The Life and Times of Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618)written by Barbara O'Sullivan: Publish America, Maryland, USA. (ISBN: 1413708285), where you will find a detailed account of the murder of Marlowe and the arrest and torture of his co-writer Thomas Kyd. Both Marlowe and Kyd had received a classical education, Marlowe having attended Corpus Christi college, Cambridge University, where he achieved an MA and Thomas Kyd having attended The Merchant Taylor's School in London. Were they working on the play Sir Thomas More? (Harley MS 7368.) The now retired curator of manuscripts, Mr. Hilton Kelliher of The British Library, acknowledges that the play "Sir Thomas More" is generally accepted as the only literary manuscript to survive from the pen of England's greatest playright, William Shakespeare. The manuscript of the play "Sir Thomas More" is copied mostly in the hand of Anthony Munday, with additions and revisions made by five other dramatists, including Dekker, Chettle and perhaps Heywood. Kelliher wrote a label (a copy of which is now in the author's possession), entitled "Shakespeare the Artist" in which he says, "Another hand commonly labelled "hand D" wrote the insurrection or "Ill May Day" scene [from the play Sir Thomas More], that runs to three pages; its attribution to Shakespeare is based mainly on features and treatment, style, imagery and spelling that can all be parallelled in his known work. The evidence of handwriting however, which depends on comparison with six surviving signatures, is rather more ambiguous": The curator of manuscripts." Thomas Kyd wrote the forerunner to Hamlet "The Spanish Tragedy" and by 1591 had been introduced to Christopher Marlowe and they resolved to work together in a writing chamber.
